Peveril's campaign to teach children about the dangers of playing on a construction site - December 5th
Peveril Homes has been putting construction site safety firmly on its agenda, through a campaign to highlight the dangers of playing on a 'live' construction site, and now thanks to the efforts of the housebuilder, children at Hillocks Primary School in Sutton-in-Ashfield are fully aware of the pitfalls of playing on or near building sites.
A 'play safe, stay safe' lesson was given to a group of five to 11-year-olds by Peveril Homes' Contracts Manager, Richard Fleckney and Dave Woodward from Independent Health & Safety Consultant R G Wilbrey.
Due to the urban location of The Hillocks development, and as with all construction projects that are carried out close to local schools, the housebuilder works hard with nearby schools to ensure that the pupils and staff are kept fully informed with what is happening on site.
Says Richard Fleckney: "It's important for the children to know where it's safe to play out. Building sites can be potentially very hazardous places for young children and therefore it is of absolute importance that the message is clearly understood.
"In our experience these assemblies provide an excellent opportunity for us to introduce ourselves as a construction company to the children and also talk to them about the potential dangers on construction sites.
"The 'play safe, stay safe' campaign enables us to engage with schools across the communities in which we build and to raise awareness of the construction industry and to promote safety on building sites.
"Hillocks Primary School is located adjacent to our development, so it is imperative that we make sure the children are aware that construction sites are not playgrounds. It is not enough to say 'No'. Children need to have the risks explained to them in a way they can relate to. By making our visit fun, we were able to hold the children's attention and teach them important, life saving messages."
