Peveril Homes Promotes Reading for Pleasure

Colin Wright, Construction and Technical Director for Midlands based Peveril Homes, visited Kilburn Infant and Nursery School in Derbyshire earlier this month to help celebrate World Book Day.

He was invited to read stories to children from reception age upwards as part of the school’s World Book Week activities to help promote reading for pleasure, especially amongst boys.

Colin said; “It’s so important to foster a love of reading in young children and stress that reading is for pleasure not just for school.”

He added, “It was a real honour to be invited to champion reading.  I had a wonderful morning, the staff and pupils were all dressed as their favourite book characters, and it was brilliant fun.”

Head teacher Mrs Baillie said; “It’s vital that children of all ages and backgrounds learn to love to read and having a visitor to come and read to the children in school in a fun way that the children can relate to, is invaluable. It is also great to know that people from the local community are prepared to give their time up to encourage them to read.”

World Book Day is the biggest annual celebration of books and reading in the UK and Ireland.  It was designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and is marked in over 100 countries around the globe. World Book Day is a partnership of publishers, booksellers and interested parties who work together to promote books and reading for the personal enrichment and enjoyment of all.  A main aim of World Book Day in the UK and Ireland is to encourage children to explore the pleasures of books and reading by providing them with the opportunity to have a book of their own.
